Making Co-Parenting Easier: 7 Apps Compared

Most of us barely remember what life was like before smartphones. Using apps to help us with everyday tasks, from banking to ordering takeout, has become second nature. What if we told you that apps are available to help you effectively co-parent after separating from your child’s other parent. Here we’ll compare some of the top app options available to download today.

OurFamilyWizard

OurFamilyWizard has a long history and has been a court-approved co-parenting app since 2001. It’s perfect for documenting all communication, financial information, and tracking time with the children. One of the things that makes this app stand out is how attorneys and mediators can use it to help facilitate client relationships. It also provides a record, that can be used at court, if the other parent does not properly co-parent or is contempt of court.  Likewise, it can also be used to defend any such allegations made against you by the other parent.  Documentation is perhaps the most important thing you can have to either prosecute or defend yourself in court and having the same is a deterrent to the other parent trying to frivolously litigate against you.  As such, if nothing else, this helps keep the peace.

Talking Parents

With Talking Parents, you have access to their Accountable Payments system as well as secure messaging. The app also provides “accountable calling” to record phone conversations between parents to ensure agreements are met. There’s also a shared calendar and document library. Many of these features are considered premium, so they will cost extra when using the app.

FamCal

Available for iOS and in the Google Play store, FamCal is a free shared family organizer app. Unlike OurFamilyWizard and Talking Parents, it’s not explicitly designed for co-parenting, but it can function that way for many people. It combines calendars, notes, events, and tasks in one easy-to-use place that’s sharable across users’ platforms.

Coparently

Coparently is designed to keep children out of the middle and allow parents to communicate directly. There’s a color-coded child custody calendar, a messaging system, an expense management tool, and a shared directory of important contacts accessible by either parent anywhere. Coparently is designed specifically to ensure that children are the focus.  It sounds common sense, but so often it is the feelings of the parents that become paramount at the cost to the kids.  Proper co-parenting focuses on the children, keeping the children out of parental dispute, and keeping the children as the top priority.

WeParent

The WeParent app offers a free trial. If it turns out to be the best fit, there is an annual fee of $99.99, or you can pay just $199.99 for lifetime access for the whole family. Like the other apps, it manages the calendar, messaging, and document storage. It also has a place to store photos. For the messaging function, it supports both one on one communication and a group text feature that every family member can use.

Cozi

Cozi isn’t just for separated parents; it is popular among all types of families to keep daily activities and communication in one place. And better yet, Cozi is free for all users. Along with similar calendar and messaging features, this app also offers a recipe and meal planner and a shopping list, which can come in handy for ensuring kids have what they need at either household.

2Houses

This app provides co-parents with a shared, synchronized, and interactive calendar to keep activities straight. When plans change, you can make a request to the other parent right through the app, which will then track the changes moving forward. The calendar also syncs with standard applications like Google calendar so you can keep track along with the rest of your schedule.
